Recently, I posted an article about holiday foods that are good for dogs. Thanksgiving is certainly a food filled holiday with many temptations for both humans and dogs! So how can you incorporate your dog into your Thanksgiving enjoyment, in a safe and healthy way?
My recent article focused on common problems and solutions facing us pet parents who want to share our goodies with our dogs. Here, I mention several Thanksgiving foods that we can give our dogs in small amounts, as long as we first address the previously mentioned problems and solutions I discussed. So here are some Thanksgiving foods that are healthy for dogs. All foods are in cooked form.
- Root vegetables – these include potatoes, sweet potatoes, parsnips, carrots and more
- Other vegetables – including broccoli, Brussels sprouts, asparagus, collard greens, green beans, squash and more! We dog parents know not to serve any onions, though.
- Meats – many or most meats are good for dogs. Don’t give overly fatty pieces. See my above-mentioned article about additives in some store bought turkey. A very important thing to remember is to never give cooked bones, as they can cause choking and intestinal blockage.
- Cranberries – preferably fresh – many canned versions have ingredients like high fructose corn syrup, which is not a good choice. If you are making fresh cranberry sauce, try saving out a bit of it plain before you add the sugar and other ingredients.
- Macaroni and cheese – a spoonful of this dish should be totally fine for most
Along with adhering to the tips in my previous article, another solution to make foods dog friendly is to just give foods a quick rinse before you offer them to your dog. In most cases, if the item is too salty, spicy or fatty, most of this should rinse away.
I hope you and your dogs enjoy a wonderful Thanksgiving together. Make it a delicious one for you and your dogs too!
