There are numerous kinds of edible algae, some of which are classified as seaweed, others not. Both can help optimize health, and you might consider adding some to your dog’s diet too.
Algae offer a range of nutrients including vitamins, minerals and amino acids, along with antioxidants. Some research shows some may also help combat a range of health ailments. For example, blue-green algae like chlorella may help rid the body of toxins, while also easing fibromyalgia, lowering high blood pressure and addressing ulcerative colitis.
Spirulina, another blue-green algae, may have anti-cancer effects, according to a study from Charles University in the Czech Republic. Researchers there found spirulina reduced the spread of pancreatic cancer cells.
Seaweeds, including dulse and kelp may also protect against cancer, according to a study out of Ryerson University in Toronto, Canada.
