Can Diet Help Manage Seizures in Dogs?

Unfortunately, a handful of dog parents have come to me recently because their dogs were having seizures, often with no known cause. Can diet help manage seizures in these cases?

One steady theme in these cases seems to be inflammation. This can be caused by any number of things.  Other factors I have seen mentioned include stress, low blood sugar, and liver problems. So not only do I help people strive for a supportive diet, but a liver-supportive protocol that includes detoxifying foods and supplements. Further, a simple homemade diet not only supports the body, but frees it up in a way, as it is not constantly being subjected to inflammatory ingredients often found in processed kibble.

Beyond a basic, simple and balanced homemade diet, one approach that has shown a lot of promise is a keto diet. This kind of diet focuses on high fat and proteins, and basically eliminates carbohydrates. Recently, I read a very promising case in the Journal of the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association. In this case, a shift away from commercial kibble and into a specific keto diet was shown successful in managing this dog’s seizures.

Although in general I always advocate a more balanced diet, we have to examine and address each case individually, and make priorities as needed. In this case, the priority was to manage this poor dog’s seizures. And it did just that.

In response, I decided to offer a keto diet as part of my diet reviews for clients whose dogs are suffering seizure issues.  Alongside proper vet care, food can really work wonders in supporting good health. I hope you will visit my Services page for my current options.
