Here are just a few of the recent fruits I have shared with my dog.
If your dogs are like mine, fruits are hit or miss. They love some fruits, including watermelon and cantaloupe, but will pass on others like pineapple and strawberries.
Like us, dogs really do have their own preferences. This summer (or anytime), see what fruits your dog likes or dislikes by offering him or her a little piece. You will learn pretty quickly what they like or don’t like. Most fruits are okay or even great for dogs, but if you are at ALL unsure, either contact me or your vet. One example that has become increasingly well known is grapes, as they can be toxic to some dogs.
Also, always remove pits, husks and other inedible parts before you give to your dog. These are basically the same rules you would use for yourself. You wouldn’t eat the bark of a pineapple, the skin of a melon, or the pit of a plum. Your dog shouldn’t either.
Another great fruit is cantaloupe, rich in beta-carotene. Read my article about carotenoids and their benefits.
Enjoy!
Sarah
