Urinary Tract Infections – Nutrition and Supplement Options

My last dog, Cori, had on and off urinary tract infections (UTIs) throughout her life. When she was younger, we dealt with it more easily through frequent trips outside, supplementation and logistical help like putting a towel under her when she slept. As she got older, the UTIs became more difficult to manage. Nonetheless, Cori and I got through it together and she lived by my side to a ripe old age of 15 1/2.

Urinary tract infections can happen to anyone of any age, and I always like to look for nutrition and supplement options to support any issue.

Cranberry for UTI

Cranberry is a well known supplement in bladder care, and is often recommended in UTI cases, and at least to help prevent future ones. Unfortunately, pure cranberry is quite bitter to most palates – which is why most cranberry juice products are loaded with sugar. This is not helpful in addressing UTIs. Instead, I suggest getting a pure cranberry pill, or a powder to mix in with food (although this may be bitter as well).

D-Mannose for UTI

Another big hitter in the UTI fight is D-mannose, a simple sugar found in fruits. D-mannose concentrates in the bladder, where it helps prevent bacteria from sticking.

Although these protocols are mentioned in my human-oriented book, Integrative Medicine, by Rakel and Minichiello, both cranberry and D-mannose are used in canine cases as well.

This item, available in my Fullscript store, is a combination of cranberry and D-mannose and thus is a double win for UTI support.

I can’t stress enough the importance of ordering supplements from reputable sources. Read my post on this important issue.

Uva Ursi and Berberine for UTI

Uva ursi, as well as berberine, a compound found in Oregon grape, goldenseal and a few other items, are often indicated in UTIs, but they have some considerations so should be used with caution in some cases. Contact me for more information on that.

Fluids and Moisture Rich foods for UTI

A fluid-rich diet helps ‘flush’ the bladder. A simple, balanced homemade diet achieves this while delivering a wide range of nutrients. Unfortunately, many homemade diets may be missing nutrients – BUT the good news is that we can fix that. I use professional software that allows me to design completely balanced, AAFCO compliant homemade recipes. I believe this tool can be a lifesaver for pet parents looking to feed homemade. Visit my Services page for more information on how I can help.

Probiotics for UTI

Probiotics are also often used. This is also important after antibiotic use, which is most often necessary to kill off the bacteria. Then, probiotics can help replenish the GI tract’s friendly bacteria that were killed off during antibiotic use.

Alongside or post-medication, nutrition and supplements offer support and may help prevent recurrence – which is common.

As with all supplements, choosing a good quality probiotic is important. Feel free to reach out to me for help. You can email me at [email protected].

Other Approaches

Other approaches indicated in UTIs include acupuncture and mind-body medicine.

And I also always revert to feeding a moisture- and nutrient-rich diet – whether it is for your dog or you! Visit my Services page for current options.

Best wishes,
Sarah
