Many people come to me because their animal friends are having a health issue, and they want to feed a supportive diet. Often, they are feeding a prescription diet and want to steer away from that for any number of reasons. These diets are formulated to address specific health issues. So what’s in prescription pet food?
I want to highlight a couple key ideas about prescription pet foods. After reading these few bullet points, decide for yourself and visit my Services page for ways I can help you formulate a truly nourishing diet for your furbabies.
- Prescription pet foods target specific health issues, often not because of the food ingredients, but one or two supplemental ingredients included in the formula.
- Those targeted supplemental ingredients could easily be added to nutritious, homemade meals, which include supportive foods like fresh vegetables, fruits, oils and meats.
- Prescription food ingredients often include brewers’ rice, corn gluten, wheat gluten, soybean oil and flavor enhancers.
- Homemade diets are high-moisture, nutrient dense, and intensely palatable (aka yummy!) This is important for everyone, but especially for pets who are not feeling well and need extra incentive to eat, and eat well.
