Asparagus was on sale this week, so it is going to be one of my dogs’ vegetables for the next couple of days. I like to use a variety of vegetables to get a variety of nutrients.
This is a wonderful, light spring vegetable that is often found on sale during the spring seasons. It has a range of B vitamins, potassium and other nutrients, and like all vegetables, it is high in moisture (aka water) and has some fiber. So, it can be beneficial for dogs who may need to lose a little weight. It is also helpful in general, for dogs who may otherwise walk around chronically dehydrated from eating dry kibble.
Asparagus is also considered a ‘cleansing’ vegetable. This is beneficial for everyone, but in particular I include it in my liver and kidney support recipes as a way to help flush out the system.
See my video clip below. First, I broke off the woody base of each piece, and discarded those. Then I rinsed the asparagus and placed it in a pan with about 4 ounces of water. I let it steam for about 5 to 10 minutes until it turned bright green.
I like to chop these up into small pieces, so they are not too stringy. This is so the asparagus doesn’t pass through the body partially undigested and, well, stringy.
When you are ready to feed a simple, truly nourishing diet to your dog that can include asparagus and more, visit my Services page to choose an option that works for you.
Some of my services include general diet reviews, specific health condition diet reviews, and in special cases, on site assistance with cooking or recipe guidance. I also offer supplement guidance, as the world of supplements can be confusing and overwhelming. It is important to choose a quality source, in order to make sure you are getting an authentic, high quality product and not a knock off or a quality-compromised item. Visit my Supplements section for guidance.
Thank you for your interest in healthy diets for dogs!
