If you have a golden retriever in your life, you and fellow golden fans probably see very similar traits. The friendly smile, the gregarious approachability, the desire to be with and say hello to everyone, everywhere, all the time…. the quick intelligence, the broad abilities and sensitivities… I could go on and on, and I am sure you could as well.
As similar as goldens are across the board personality-wise, there are, of course, many differences. Some goldens are more reserved or cautious, while others are more dare-devilish or carefree … some may be more goofy, others more serious.
So emotionally and mentally, goldens are the same, but different. The same can be said for their dietary needs.
Just as with all dogs, each body is an individual body. Their needs and heck, their preferences, vary from dog to dog. Although many goldens will pretty much eat anything in front of them, their actual needs can vary depending on age, health status, activity level, and specific situations going on at any given moment.
For example, individual goldens will benefit from certain supportive foods and supplements in many situations:
- Young goldens
- Aging and elderly goldens
- Goldens with specific health issues – skin, cancer, heart issues, etc.
- And many more individual situations!
We have the ability and the power to tailor our dogs’ diets to their specific situations, over the years. Nobody should live on the same food day in and day out, year after year, with no consideration of what is happening in their life at that time.
It can be a great comfort and reassurance that we can use food to help support and nurture our sweet goldens. So… what does YOUR golden need, right now? Let me help you figure that out!
Enjoy your goldens! ~ Sarah Whitman, MS
