Is Your Dog Picky?

Sometimes, I will hear people talk about their dogs being ‘picky.’ It is absolutely true that dogs have their own food preferences, just like we do. One of my dogs loves blueberries, for example, and the other turns away.

However, often when a dog is acting this way, it is a meaningful sign to you. So what can it mean when your dog is acting “picky” with food?

Your dog’s food smells BAD!  If you are a dog parent, you know smell is big for dogs. Did you know a dog’s nose has about 300 million olfactory receptors? We have about six million.

This means a dog can pick up smells we can’t detect. No wonder dogs always want to stop, sniff and track.

This also means they can smell things in their food – things we would never know about.

Commercial pet foods can contain rotten meats, mold, chemicals, drugs and more. Who would want to eat all that? Feeding a homemade diet can ensure your dog does not have to fall victim to any of that.

So.. if your dog is acting ‘picky’ it could be that he or she needs better food.

Your dog doesn’t feel well. We don’t always want to eat when we are sick. Same goes for dogs. It could be they have a bug, indigestion or something more serious. If your dog is not eating, it is important to make sure there are no medical reasons.

Once you have figured out any medical issues, feeding nourishing homemade meals can tempt an otherwise uninterested palate. (Believe me I have been there with my elderly dog!)

Your dog is having trouble chewing. Older dogs or dogs with dental problems can have a tough time chewing harder food. A soft homemade diet can get some excellent nourishment into a dog who otherwise wouldn’t want to eat.

Your dog is nervous. Dogs can get nervous for any number of reasons, just like we do. Offering more tasty meals (in a calm, quiet environment) can help encourage a nervous dog to eat.

Your dog is bored of the same old same old. Don’t you get bored of eating the same thing all the time? You dog might too! A healthy homemade diet offers wonderful variety, which benefits health and offers excitement.

Once you know the reason your dog is acting picky, you can help with a better diet made of REAL food. It’s easy and I will help you. Explore my Services page to find the best fit for your needs or see below.
