Lyme disease in dogs – what to do when your dog tests positive.
I was talking with a veterinarian recently about how to handle Lyme disease diagnosis and possible treatment.
He said, if you ask ten vets whether or not to treat a positive Lyme disease test with antibiotics, you will get ten different answers. I was surprised to hear this.
But he clarified something. There is a difference between being diagnosed with Lyme, and actually having a Lyme infection.
A dog can be bitten by a Lyme disease carrying tick, test positive and show no symptoms. OR, they can develop an active infection, which WILL display symptoms. These include lethargy, fever, lack of appetite and other symptoms you would expect from a sick dog. At that point you really need to treat it.
Some people also choose to treat it after receiving the positive test, symptoms or no symptoms.
He then proceeded to tell me that in many cases, a dog who tests positive can fight off the disease and not actually develop an infection.
So, this got me thinking – how do we strengthen the body to help it fight off infection and hopefully stop it from happening in the first place? Of course, one of my standard answers is… with better food and supplements!
